Lady Gaga and Eminem Top MTV VMA Nominations

2010 has been the year of Lady Gaga so it's no surprise that she received an astounding 13 nominations for the 2010 MTV VMA Awards. With that count, Gaga makes MTV history, earning the most nominations ever by an artist in a single year. She is also the first female artist to be nominated for two different videos in the Video of the Year category in the same year ("Bad Romance" and "Telephone" featuring Beyoncй.)

Following behind Lady Gaga is Eminem, who received 8 nominations. Eminem has also had a stellar year, his latest album Recovery has stayed atop the US charts since its release on June 21st, quickly becoming one of the biggest records of the year. "Not Afraid" is nominated in 5 different categories including the coveted "Video of the Year" category. It was also nominated for Best Hip Hop Video, alongside "Forever," his collaboration with Drake and Kanye West.

New-comer Florence + The Machine received a nomination for Video of the Year for "Dog Days Are Over" along with 3 other well-deserved including Best Rock Video. Universal Motown artists Kid Cudi and Drake will battle it out for Best Hip Hop Video. Label mate Nicki Minaj will also take on her competition in the Best New Artist category. Other recognized videos included Rihanna's "Rude Boy", Taylor Swift's "Fifteen", Dan Black's "Symphonies", and the smash summer hit Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It".

Congratulations to all in the UMG family who helped contribute to a total of 47 nominations

Eminem & Rihanna's video "Love The Way You Lie" is out now!

Video for Eminem's Smash Single "Love The Way You Lie," Featuring Rihanna, to Premiere on MTV and VEVO This Thursday, August 5th, at 9 PM EDT

Eagerly awaited clip features Rihanna, Megan Fox, and Dominic Monaghan

Eminem, the Nielsen SoundScan Artist of the Decade for 2000-2009, will premiere the eagerly awaited video for his No. 1 single "Love The Way You Lie," featuring Rihanna, on MTV and VEVO.com on Thursday, August 5th at 9:00 PM EDT.

Shot in Los Angeles, the video was directed by Joseph Kahn, who, in addition to his work on previous Eminem videos, has also directed clips for Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, and 50 Cent among many others. Rihanna appears in the video, which also features Megan Fox (Transformers) and Dominic Monaghan (The Lord of the Rings, Lost) playing a couple going through the extremes of an abusive relationship.

"Joseph and I worked pretty closely together to make sure we got this right," commented Eminem. "Trying to make this tough subject work visually is a challenge. It was great to have Rihanna, Megan and Dominic on board for this….they really brought it and made this video super-powerful."

"Love The Way You Lie" is Eminem's fourth single to top the Billboard Hot 100. It has reigned at No. 1 on the US Digital Songs chart for five consecutive weeks and has sold more than 1.4 million downloads. The track is the second single released from Eminem's latest album Recovery (Aftermath Entertainment/Interscope Records), which bowed at No. 1 on Billboard's US Top 200 Albums chart in June with sales of 741,000 copies, and held the top slot for 5 weeks. The album easily outpaced any other release for this year, and set a bar that no other album has reached for first-week sales in nearly two years.
In May, Recovery's first single, "Not Afraid," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard US Hot 100 — the first rap song to do so in 13 years. Recovery has being hailed as a tour de force for the rapper, earning a four-star review from Rolling Stone, which described it as "his fiercest and most focused work in a long time," while USA Today proclaimed it "a strong return to the form that made him a star in the first place."

Eminem also received 8 nominations for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Eminem and Jay-Z will perform co-headlining dates at Detroit's Comerica Park on September 2nd and 3rd and at New York's Yankee Stadium on September 13th and 14th. Tickets for the four shows are sold-out. Eminem will also be performing at the Epicenter Festival in Southern California on September 25th. Tickets are still available from http://www.epicenterfestival.com/

Megan Fox donated her fee for her video appearance to Sojourn, a shelter for abused women. Sojourn provides battered women and their children a safe space to regroup, rebuild, and reestablish their self-esteem and lives. For more information on Sojourn please visit http://www.opcc.net/

The Who Release Previously Unreleased Material

The Who to Release Previously Unreleased Material as Part Of 40th Anniversary Edition of Live At Leeds

"What hits you when you listen to it is you realise how much you need to see the Who" Pete Townshend, 1970

November 8th 2010, will see USM and Polydor (US UMe release date tbc) release a very special collector's edition of the seminal Live At Leedsalbum and, for the very first time, this will include the full Hull concert recorded the following night.

Live At Leeds was the ultimate confirmation of the Who's sheer ferocity as a live rock act, without equal. Whereas their studio recordings had only tantalisingly hinted at the all-out barrage of the senses that a live Who gig produced, Live At Leeds removed all doubt.

Following on the heels of the success of the rock opera Tommy, and the band's grandstanding appearance at the Woodstock Festival, when released in 1970, Live At Leeds unwittingly documented the Who at the peak of their powers, whose shows now stretched up to two and a half hours without a break containing Tommy as their centrepiece.

Those 150 minutes are captured on the Super-Deluxe 40th Anniversary Collectors' Edition of this landmark of live albums. At the time, live pop or rock albums tended to be primitive affairs when capturing both band and audience. Live At Leeds was no exception, recorded on a mobile unit placed amid the kitchen of a university refectory in an unassuming industrial town in northern England. But the results – crackling noises and all – were enough for influential pop culture writer Nik Cohn, to describeLive At Leeds in his New York Times column as "the best live rock album ever made." As recently as 2006, it topped a poll in Q magazine of the greatest live rock albums ever made – a testament to its enduring legacy.

This new edition of one of the most important live rock albums ever contains:
  • Two CDs containing the full Leeds show from 14 February 1970 recorded for the album including the complete performance of Tommy
  • For the first time ever - two CDs containing the Who's complete performance from Hull, which was recorded the following evening, but ultimately left in the vaults as Leeds was thought to have yielded better results. It was a close call as can be heard, the Hull show was equally incendiary.
  • A heavyweight vinyl reproduction of the original six-track album as it was released in 1970
  • A new 64-page hard-back, colour book containing rare photos, memorabilia from the original release, (replica contracts, letters, poster gig list, photos and more), plus liner notes detailing the history of this landmark album.
  • A replica 7" single –   "Summertime Blues / Heaven & Hell" with colour sleeve.
  • A classic Pete Townshend poster
  • Housed in a hard-back box with cover artwork reproducing the original black stamped vinyl first UK pressing which, according to the July 2010 edition of Record Collector magazine, is now valued at approximately Ј250 in mint condition.

YouTube "suffers" from Whitesnake - 10 Million Views!

Whitesnake's Video "Here I Go Again" Hits an Impressive 10 Million Views on YouTube

More than two decades after its MTV debut in 1987, Whitesnake's provocative video "Here I Go Again" has generated more than 10,000,000 views on YouTube.
The demand for Whitesnake has never waned. Original fans have stayed loyal to the metal band since the '80s and new fans worldwide, who weren't even born when Whitesnake dominated MTV, are discovering the band and their hit song.

More than 10,000,000 viewers have tuned in to watch the iconic video "Here I Go Again" with a sexy woman (frontman David Coverdale's then-girlfriend, Tawny Kitaen) seductively dancing on the hood of a Jaguar. Vh1 named the number one hit as one of the top 20 "Greatest Songs of the 1980's." The video was played constantly on MTV when it debuted and now continues to be a fan favorite online as fans' views show no sign of slowing down.

UME/Geffen recently released the Deluxe Edition of Whitesnake's self-titled album, originally released in 1987, with a DVD and 4 audio bonus tracks in addition to the original songs including YouTube's latest milestone smash, "Here I Go Again."

13 years later: Soundgarden return!

As one of the first bands to release music on the venerated Sub Pop label, and the first band to come out of the 90’s Seattle music scene to later sign to a major label, they are once again making history with Telephantasm. The band has announced that they will be partnering with innovative gaming publisher Activision Publishing, Inc. to release the album on September 27th/ 28th via A&M/Universal Music Group inside 1 million copies of the new videogame Guitar Hero®: Warriors of Rock.  This release marks the first time a music album will be simultaneously released and bundled with a video game launch.  All North American Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock launch units will contain the 12-song retrospective disc and will be exclusive to Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock for one week (until October 5).  Additionally, fans will get full access to the band’s new album as downloadable content for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock day and date with the launch of the game.

“We are thrilled about the exclusive and trailblazing partnership between Guitar Hero:  Warriors of Rock and Soundgarden,” said David Haddad, Chief Operating Officer, Guitar Hero.  “The fact that this seminal band chose Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock as the way to reintroduce themselves speaks volumes about Guitar Hero’s ability to deliver music, in an exciting, interactive way, to millions of music fans and gamers. The extensive collaboration – bundling Telephantasm with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, including the unreleased “Black Rain” as an exclusive in the game and releasing the entire album as downloadable content – demonstrates Soundgarden’s and Guitar Hero’scommitment to delivering a great experience for its fans.”

On April 16th 2010, Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden took to the stage together for the first time in 12 years at the Showbox Theater in Seattle.  Playing songs from their celebrated and acclaimed catalogue, the result was nothing short of brilliant and saw the four band members playing with the same heart and vigor for which they have always been known.
